The HP DL585 G7 was designed to run in data centers, where they were stacked in racks, and they did not have a monitor or a keyboard attached to them. I know the HP DL585 G7 server is an old server, but there are still thousands of them still use, and I have found several other posts where other people have seen this same problem, so at least, I'm not alone with this issue. Please copy your suggestions to my email address, since I check my email more often that I check the Centos forum. It concerns me that /usr/bin/Startx works great, but the boot login display does not work. Your knowledge and insight on this is probably greater than mine, so I definitely would appreciate any suggestions that you might have. OK, now you know about as much about this problem as I do. The last line in Xorg.0.log on Centos 7.9 (which works fine) is: (II) Server terminated successfully (0). (II) event4 - PS/2 Logitech Mouse: device removed (II) event1 - AT Translated Set 2 keyboard: device removed (II) event3 - HP Virtual Keyboard : device removed (II) event2 - HP Virtual Keyboard : device removed (II) event0 - Power Button: device removed The last lines in Xorg.0.log after a fresh boot are: The Centos 8.5 virtual machine is running no the exact same server where Centos 8.5 is having problems. The server is an HP DL585 G7 server with 4 AMD Opteron 6176 processors. The legacy radeon module almost does not exist. I could modify the Grub command line, not to load the radeon module, but since Centos 7.9 has no problems with it, that seems unnecessary, and experimenting with Grub might not be a good plan. Uninstalling that VGA Controller is not an option since that is where my monitor plugs into the server. VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. The "radeon" module is being loaded because HP installed on every HP DL585 G7, the VGA Controller ES1000: I can't even find the rpm that contains radeon_dri.so. Now, /usr/lib64/dri/radeon_dri.so is replaced with /usr/lib64/dri/radeonsi_dri.so. Maybe the "radeon" error is an issue on Centos 8.5 while it is not an issue on Centos 7.9. When Centos 8.5 runs as a virtual machine, it is using a "vmware" module with takes the place of the "radeon" module when Centos 8.5 runs on the server I next installed Rocky Centos 8.5 in VMware Workstation, and it worked great. I am using a Gnome desktop, and that works fine everywhere I have used it, including Centos 7.9. Since restarting gdm and stopping/starting gdm does not help, I started to look at the /var/log/gdm log files, but none were there. I have a Centos 7.9 installation that has the exact same error in Xorg.0.log, but the boot login display is fine, so that is probably not an issue. (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib64/dri/radeon_dri.so failed (libdricore9.2.0-devel.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) In both cases, the network works fine, and I can ssh into the server, and run /usr/bin/Startx, and that works fine. Next, I tried the Rocky Centos 8.5 to see if it had the same problem, and it did. Yes, I first tried RedHat 8.5, and was not able to obtain a login screen after boot, and yes, I was having trouble with the subscription manager.
